MI DEpartment of Natural Resources

This position provided me with a unique opportunity to continually engage in diverse tasks and develop a wide range of skills that I never anticipated enjoying. After securing a wildlife position in the Lower-Southern Region of Michigan, I was assigned to the Paris Field Office near Big Rapids, MI. My primary responsibility was the management of three State Wildlife/Game areas within our jurisdiction (Haymarsh/Martiny/Pentwater). This involved ensuring the maintenance of a healthy and diverse ecosystem, as well as the upkeep of trails for both hunters and nature enthusiasts. One of the key tasks involved utilizing specialized equipment, such as a 5115 John Deere Tractor with various attachments, to plant food plots to support wildlife and hunting activities. Additionally, activities like tree planting, invasive species management, and mapping using ArcGIS were regular components of my role in managing the SGA's.

During my time at the DNR, I had the opportunity to participate in various research projects, including bear hair surveys and goose banding, to monitor population dynamics. Collaborating with neighboring field offices was common practice for more intricate tasks like banding. Although engaging with the local community was not a primary focus of my role, it was a personally rewarding aspect of my job. From assisting with inquiries over the phone to conducting on-site inspections with farmers and handling wildlife samples for analysis, I found great fulfillment in providing assistance and listening to the community's experiences with wildlife and nature. I was fortunate to have supportive mentors who guided me in not only the practical aspects of my duties but also in gaining a deeper understanding of the broader context of wildlife management.

White Lake yacht Club

Working at the local yacht club provided me with the opportunity to enhance my skills in working with diverse individuals. Many of the members came from outside the community to spend their summers at the club. This experience exposed me to individuals with different backgrounds and lifestyles, challenging me to cultivate empathy and address their concerns with care and understanding, even if they appeared insignificant to me.

The environment at the yacht club was dynamic, with frequent events and sailing competitions contributing to its operations. This required me to be adaptable and versatile, seamlessly transitioning from managing the kitchen to assisting with boat docking tasks. I found fulfillment in occupying a managerial role, particularly as someone who did not have a prior membership background. Embracing a fresh perspective, I leveraged my unique experiences to effectively contribute to the club’s success.

Having the responsibility of opening and closing the club was a privilege, as it symbolized the significant role the establishment played in the lives of its members. It was an honor to be entrusted with such duties and to be a part of an organization that held great sentimental value for many individuals.

River Stop Cafe

This position provided me with a valuable entry point into the food service industry, deepening my appreciation for service-oriented professionals. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work in a quaint rural setting, allowing me to develop more personal connections with the individuals I served compared to my previous experience in an ice-cream shop. This role served as a secondary employment during the summer, presenting me with a significant challenge in balancing my work and personal life. Through this experience, I honed my ability to establish and maintain boundaries, becoming more assertive in declining tasks when feeling overwhelmed.

White Lake Dairy Treat

My first job at the age of thirteen was a valuable experience that shaped my work ethic and instilled important habits that continue to guide me to this day. The owner of the business served as a role model for me and set a high standard for a positive work environment. She personally trained all staff members and led by example, demonstrating the benefits of ethical business practices. As I grew older and took on new responsibilities, her trust in me was meaningful, knowing how much the business meant to her. This job provided me with the opportunity to develop leadership skills, mentor new employees, and prioritize their well-being. I took pride in my responsibilities, such as opening and closing the store, managing inventory, and most importantly, connecting with members of the community. Through this experience, I learned the value of empathy and honed my customer service skills, which I continue to utilize in my professional endeavors.
